Hidden Consequences

Hidden consequences arise when the effects of an action are separated from the moment of decision—temporally, spatially, or semantically. Users cannot realistically assess what their action triggers, such as with data sharing, subscriptions, or algorithmic changes.

This separation creates knowledge asymmetry. The system knows the consequences; the user does not. Decisions appear harmless but unfold irreversible effects later. Trust is not broken instantly, but gradually eroded.

Responsible design surfaces consequences clearly, understandably, and proportionally. Risk emerges where systems benefit from opacity.
